What is Buccal Fat Removal?

Everyone carries weight differently in the body. With a healthy diet and exercise, weight can be lost but where we want to lose it is not always a choice. Losing weight in the face can be difficult for some, and the areas it’s lost may not always be ideal. It can leave patients with volume loss in the cheek and under eye areas or fat deposits in the lower/mid cheek area and jawline. This is called the buccal fat pad.

Why remove buccal fat?

Generally, facial volume can be a desired feature as it does promote a more youthful appearance and as we age, we can lose some of that, causing the face to look tired or gaunt. Filler or fat injections can be done to replace some of the volume loss.  On the other hand, fat deposits can be more prominent in the mid and lower face leaving people feeling as if they have “chipmunk cheeks”. Some individuals may want a more sculpted look or defined jawline.  Buccal fat can leave a patient heavier in the mid and lower face, making them appear heavier than they are. Fortunately, this fat can be surgically removed.

How does buccal fat removal work?

Buccal fat removal can be done in office or under anesthesia in the operating room. It is typically done in conjunction with a facelift, but can be done as a standalone procedure. It is safe, effective, and results are typically seen in the early months following surgery. A small incision is made through the cheeks and the fat pads are removed. The incisions are then closed. The scarring typically heals well, but there will be scars. These results are permanent and repeat treatment is not necessary.  Patients can return to work quickly and resume normal activities after a couple weeks.

How much does buccal fat removal cost?

On average buccal fat removal in Utah in 2021 can cost around $3000. Each provider and center will have different costs and fees. It is important to see a specialized facial plastics surgeon for facial cosmetic procedures to receive the best outcomes.
