Using Laser To Treat Skin: BBL Photo Rejuvenation

If you are looking to take your skin to the next level, you need to try BBL Photorejuvenation Treatments. A complete series of BBL treatments is the ultimate skin rejuvenation treatment that has the ability to not only treat premature aging, but also sun damage and other skin imperfections such as rosacea. We offer BBL at both our Draper and Layton, Utah Facial Plastics, locations and it is becoming a very popular treatment.

What Is BBL Photorejuvenation?

BBL Laser Treatment

Lasers for skin rejuvenation started to make their way into the scene in the 1960’s, and technology has continued to improve over the years. Lasers that treat the skin are divided into two categories: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative lasers essentially remove the top layer of the skin, leaving it looking smoother and firmer. Non-ablative lasers use a variety of wavelengths, targeting different layers of the skin to improve damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen production.

BBL (Broadband Light) facial treatments are very similar to IPL treatments, however BBL is much more advanced when it comes to treating skin discoloration as well as enhancing the overall health of the skin cells and how they continue to age.  BBL (Broad Band Light) is a non-invasive and non-abrasive rejuvenation treatment, meaning minimal downtime with great results. BBL uses the power of light to target a variety of skin conditions (see below).

What Can Be Treated with BBL Photorejuvenation Treatments?

  • Aging
  • Rosacea
  • Redness
  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Broken capillaries
  • Birthmark
  • Freckles

What Happens During a BBL Photorejuvenation Treatment?

During a BBL treatment, the handpiece delivers the light deep into the skin while also being able to cool the skin simultaneously. This state-of-the-art handpiece is able to deliver high-powered energy while causing very minimal pain and side effects, and most are able to tolerate treatment without numbing.

The most common area of treatment is the face, decollate and the skin on the hands, but all areas of the body can be treated including arms, legs, and scalp. A cooling tip is applied in between passes to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. BBL treatments are performed by our experienced estheticians. The entire process takes approximately 20 minutes on average and results are achieved after 2-6 treatments. This is not a one and done treatment. Sun damage and discolorations have formed over time, and it takes time to lift and reduce as well.  The number of treatments is discussed during a consultation and depends on the skin damage that is being treated.

How To Prepare for BBL Photorejuvenation

During your consultation, your esthetician will discuss in detail how to prepare for your first BBL treatment and treatments going forward. It is extremely important that the area(s) being treated are not tanned, this means avoiding direct sunlight at least 4-6 weeks before each treatment. If you are someone who uses self-tanner, this should be avoided at least 2 weeks before your BBL treatment. At least one week prior to treatment, avoid waxing, chemical peels, and products that contain retinol, salicylic or glycolic acid.

BBL treatments are not effective on darker skin tones. To be effective, there needs to be a good contrast between the individual’s skin tone and hyperpigmentation area. When there is a good contract, it allows the BBL energy to be absorbed by the damaged skin (pigmentation or capillary) and not by the surrounding skin.

Recovery From BBL Photorejuvenation Treatment

Recovery will vary from patient to patient however, there is typically no recovery time. Redness should be expected to last at least an hour, although for some it can last up to 48 hours. Following treatment pigmentation will begin to come to the surface and will appear darker than before, this is completely normal and can last anywhere from 1-2 weeks before flaking off. Once the dark pigmentation flakes off, it will either be lighter or gone, depending on how far along the individual is in their treatment process. If pigment is really deep, other treatments or home care products may be recommended to optimize results. Redness and dark pigmentation can be concealed with makeup and should use proper post care products to promote proper healing. Sunscreen daily is always highly recommended, especially after laser treatments.
