Hand Rejuvenation in Salt Lake City, Utah

What is hand rejuvenation?

When it comes to reversing signs of aging, the face typically gets most of the attention. And with all the latest surgical and non-surgical advancements in facial rejuvenation, it’s relatively easy to turn back the clock with injectables and facial procedures. We find that patients love their more youthful appearance but come to realize that something is still giving away their age…their hands.

Our hand and finger dermal filler treatments are the perfect treatment for your aging hands.

Over time, the hands begin to lose volume, just as the face does. The skin becomes loose and wrinkled making veins and tendons appear more prominent. The effects of sun damage also begin to appear in the form of pigmentation or dark spots in the skin. Luckily, just as with the face, there are great options available today at Utah Facial Plastics for hand rejuvenation.

Who is an ideal candidate for hand fillers?

The ideal candidate for hand rejuvenation filler treatments is a male or female, typically above age 40, concerned with loose or wrinkled skin on the back of the hands or fingers and possibly age or sun spots as well.

Hand Rejuvenation FAQs

Patients are welcome to meet with one of our expert injectors to discuss hand rejuvenation at Utah Facial Plastics. All injectors are trained and highly experienced in hand rejuvenation. Contraindications will be discussed as well as your medical history. They will then discuss what to expect with treatment, recovery, and results. Together you can determine the best course of action and if an injectable is recommended, treatment can be done at the same time.

Two forms of treatment are typically recommended to fully address signs of aging in the hands. First, volume is replaced and the underlying structure is repaired by the use of temporary dermal fillers, such as Restylane Lyft, Radiesse or Sculptra. Fat grafting is also a great option to restore volume. While it’s considered more invasive, the results are long-term. IPL (Photofacial) or pigmentation specific chemical peels are then recommended to address the tone and discoloration of the skin.

Radiesse or Sculptra is injected under the skin to volumize and stimulate collagen production in the hands. With either injectable, the procedure is simple, quick (20-30 minutes in-office) and comes with no downtime, though there will be some tenderness following treatment. It is advised that patients avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E and certain herbal medications 7 days prior to treatment to minimize bruising and swelling as those are side-effects that may occur as well.

Fat can be harvested from the thigh or abdomen and injected into the hands for a more permanent solution to volume loss in the hands. The procedure is performed in-office under local anesthetic by Dr. Thompson or Dr. Henstrom only. Both facial plastic surgeons have a great deal of experience with fat grafting as it’s a common procedure they perform for facial rejuvenation as well.

Once the underlying structure of the hand is addressed, pigmentation can be lifted by either IPL treatment(s) or a pigmentation peel. IPL or photo facial treatments work by targeting pigmentation in the skin and bringing it to the surface. Sometimes a series of short treatments are needed to fully remove the discoloration on the back of the hands. This is also true of chemical peels that lighten the pigmentation with each treatment.
