Botox for men? You heard that right, and it’s more common than you’d think. The number of men receiving Botox treatments increased by 33% from 2000 to 2014 and that number continues to grow. So what do men need to know prior to trying Botox for the first time?
1)Â This Is Not A Spa Treatment
We’re talking needles here so it’s important to realize there is going to be some level of pain. While it is minimal, it’s no trip to the spa.
The needle is as small as they come and ice is given to numb the area up a bit to minimize discomfort. But it will feel like little pinches with each injection made. Luckily, the actual procedure is super quick, lasting approximately 15 minutes after discussing goals, concerns, etc. with the injector.
Most patients do great and are just fine with topical numbing can be applied 20 minutes prior to treatment if a patient prefers.
2) There Are Possible Side-Effects
While the possibility is incredibly low, it’s still important to know that possible side-effects can occur. One possibility is the chance of bruising at an injection site. Don’t expect it but know it can happen. It helps to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil about 5 days prior to treatment to keep the risk as low as possible.
Another possible side-effect that is even less likely than bruising is having a brow or eyelid droop following treatment. Chances of this happening are lower with experienced injectors but you could still be that 1 in 1000. It’s not permanent or fatal but may require waiting for the Botox to completely wear off before going away. Often times, eye drops can be given that will help within 3-5 days following the first sign of drooping.
3) Less Is Often More
This is true for both men and women but especially men. Most prefer looking masculine and rugged but still look younger and more rested.
The most common areas Botox is injected is in the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. Most men don’t want their upper face to be completely frozen so it’s best to start on the lighter side and come back in a week or two for a touch-up if you decide you won’t more.
4) Prepare To Be Addicted
This is the warning we give to all patients. Are you ready to do this every 3-5 months or at least a few times a year? With one treatment, you will likely be hooked. Patients tend to love the look they achieve with Botox and are very disappointment when it wears off.
Botox studies also show that Botox seems to provide a bit of an emotional boost, whether it’s from the results that people like or from the actual product itself after being injected into the muscle. More studies are being done to fully evaluate why this is but trust us, you’ll likely love Botox and want more.
