Dermal Fillers in Salt Lake City, UT

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gel like substances that are injected into the skin to help diminish lines and restore volume or structure to the face where it has been lost. The most common fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that the human body produces on its own. Some of the most popular and carried fillers at UFP Aesthetics Medical Spa include:

Trying to keep up with all of these products is by itself a difficult task, but it’s probably enough to know initially that each product has specific indicated uses, advantages, and disadvantages. The expert injectors at Utah Facial Plastics, who all specialize in dermal fillers in Utah, will discuss your concerns and educate you on which product(s) would be best for your needs.

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injected into the desired area with a very fine needle and produce immediate results. Generally, very small amounts are injected into each area in order to ensure a smooth and even distribution. They offer the following benefits:

  • Offer many possibilities and uses for enhancement including:
    • Softening of fine lines around the nose and mouth:
      • Nasolabial folds (lines extending from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth)
      • Melolabial folds (lines extending from the corners of the mouth to the sides of the chin)
      • Fine lines around the lips (lipstick lines)
    • Lip enhancement producing subtle to dramatic results in a very natural way
    • Loss of  volume or definition in the cheeks, temples, and jawline
    • Filling of hollowing under the eyes that occurs as the midface migrates downward
  • Produce immediate results
  • Performed in the office with topical or local anesthetic
    • No need for sedative anesthesia
    • None to minimal down time
  • Minimal or no bruising
  • Safe and effective when used and administered properly
  • All treatments are done by an experienced injector

The Utah Facial Plastics Difference

As facial plastic surgeons, Drs. Thompson, Henstrom, and Manning have extensive training in areas of the face, which is best to have when it comes to treating the face. Unfortunately, injectables are not highly regulated and many untrained doctors and non-physicians can easily take a weekend course prior to offering injectables, typically at a lower or discounted rate. There are risks and complications that come from an inexperienced injector. In such cases, the injectable may get a bad reputation when the problem actually lies with the injector and not the product.

It’s also important to realize that just because someone is a plastic surgeon or dermatologist, even if board certified, doesn’t necessarily mean they perform injectable treatments often. Many have a high volume of breast implant experience and less of a focus on facial fillers and Botox. Facial volumization has become a mainstream focus in facial rejuvenation and choosing a physician that understands the different levels of tissue in the face is important. With the many different dermal filler and injectable options on the market today, you want someone that also understands what products are best for certain areas of the face and can make appropriate recommendations based on your specific needs and concerns.

Our expert nurse injectors, have been specifically trained under our doctors and have years of experience treating many patients with Botox and injectables. Their results are incredibly natural and they spend ample time with each patient to ensure the best outcome possible.

dermal filler faq's

The best candidates for dermal fillers in Utah are those with mild to moderate signs of aging or a desire to augment a certain area of the face, such as the lips or cheeks. Younger patients often begin getting dermal filler and/or botox injections as a way to prevent or stave off signs of aging before they worsen.

Dr. Scott Thompson and Dr. Douglas Henstrom, double board certified facial plastic surgeons in Utah, have extensive experience with dermal fillers. During your consultation, they will discuss your concerns, goals and desires.

They will then examine the structures of your face, assess the quality of your skin tone and bone structure, and will make recommendations he feels will help you achieve your aesthetic goals. They will also discuss any possible risks and complications that could follow your procedure, if applicable. Information on skincare and other procedures that may enhance your overall result will be provided as well.

A Utah Facial Plastics associate will then provide you with all the financial details on any procedure discussed at your consultation and give financing options if applicable. They can also help facilitate the next step in the process and/or provide additional resources, such as before and after photos, articles, educational videos, etc.

Your dermal filler treatment can be done at the same time as your consultation if you decide to proceed and if your injector determines you are a good candidate.

It is recommended that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), for about a week prior to receiving treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding.

Upon arrival at our office, numbing cream is applied once your injector has determined you are a candidate for Juvederm and has determined which formulation is right for you. We let that sit for about 20-30 minutes so any pain at the injection site is minimized. The injection itself usually takes about 15 minutes.

There is no recovery time post procedure and most patients return to work or resume their day following their appointment. You may experience some tenderness, temporary redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, and bumps at the injections sites. These typically clear up on their own in 7 days or less. We do provide an ice pack for you to take with you and place on the injection site(s) for a brief period. It is typically recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, extended exposure to heat, and alcohol consumption for the remainder of the day if possible.

Patient Reviews

"I had a wonderful experience with Lauren at UFP, as well as with everybody else I interacted with while there. Everyone was super knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly, and the facility was also nice."- LS

“I went in yesterday for some Juvederm. This was my 1st visit here, but not my 1st time with fillers. This was by far the best experience I have had. Alfie did my injections. She is precise and did an excellent job. No bruising whatsoever which is rare for me. She was super nice, educated and the results exceeded my expectations. I am so happy to have found her after some hit and miss experiences with other local plastic surgeons. Highly recommend!!” ~ AM

Jeanna is great! I was super nervous getting botox and she helped calm my nerves and was extremely informative. I go back to her every 3-4 months and have never felt like she was pushing any other services on me and truly only gave me what she thought I needed. ~ AS
